Northern Landscape and Allotments

Chris first moved into Mill 1 in 2004 on the 4th floor and used to share a large open studio. Not long after bands started moving in and it soon became unbearable for him to work. So in Nov 2005 he moved into Mill 2 and was the only one there for nearly a year. Chris spent six long weeks renovating his studio and gallery and wanted to open for Christmas that year. The grand opening happened and was a success attracting visitors from far, also displaying the potential to other artists.

His work has rapidly evolved from small tradditional works in Watercolour to larger, bolder works on canvas using Acrylics. Although he maintains his tradditional roots, he preffers to work on this larger scale in his unique style.

Country...

The communities of Mossley and Saddleworth provide great walking territory including ancient roman roads and small paths or 'Pack horse tracks' leading to some of the most unique scenery in the North of England. Most of my childhood was spent exploring Mossley and the surrounding Saddleworth moors , a place of strong traditions which continue to be cherished and preserved by the locals.

My paintings have been heavily influenced by these childhood memories, incorporating a naive and often reminiscent quallity. I often undertake commisions for people who wish to own a piece of history on canvas, preserving memories of a place they hold close to their heart.

Town...

Mossley has a unique character due to being built in a steep valley, and has all the typical features of a Northern industrial town that is rapidly changing due to over development . I suppose you could say i'm trying to preserve it in my own little way.

These compositions were made from attatching view finders cut from spare pieces of mountboard to the windows in the mill. This gave me abstract cropped images that are not always identified with normal vision.

This became an on-going project forcing me to look much closer at the Town that i'd grown up in. This is also partly the reason why I started looking at old buildings like Sheds, Gararges and out side toilets!

Allotments...

For a long time I contemplated starting a new series of paintings featuring rustic run down sheds and garages, but was unsure how to incorporate them into my landscapes. I also wished to carry out more figurative studies, having been inspired during recent visits to France by Van Gogh’s ‘Farm Workers’ and Cezanne’s ‘Card Players’. So when I met people on the allotment I was instantly inspired by the charactors, and wanted to capture that timeless quality that they evoked.

This project is now two years running and is becoming very successful, including a feature on BBC Gardeners World that broadcasts on Fri 13th June 2008.
