Each quarter we feature an artist from the mill on the home page. This feature is...
Joe burke was one of Woodend Mills early residents, moving into the mill in 1993. He sadly died in 2007, and we wanted to pay our respects to him, so we decided to make a page in his honour.
Rags to Riches. . . .We are currently developing ideas to showcase the creative talents of Woodend artists, so we have decided to open our studios for the local comunity to access. This will encorage & include people of all ages and there will be various workshops you can get involed in. The event will be based on a theme of 'Re-cycling', and will mainly be staged on the weekend of the 30th & 31st Aug 2008.
If you, your child or Grand parent would be interested in getting involved in this event then please contact us..
"My work is going in many
directions but I have a strong
pull towards recycling
(including working over
existing paintings,
re-energising the attractive
but often emotionally
bankrupt images). I have
also been fascinated by
Lowry's 'The Funeral Party',
and used the visual ideas
within it, in my own work.
To me, in musical terms,
it's like a theme and variations - here's one, now here's another slightly different, a bigger one, a larger gap between this and the next, a small one etc. I play with ideas as I work. It's what keeps me interested. Often I don't know where my work is going and I work with unresolved ideas and images. I will need another lifetime at least"
"I'm currently doing some work at school, college and in the community. Working on your own in the way I do can be a bit intense. So working with and for others, helps to balance this and can be a bit of a reality check".
"I am also secretary of Woodend Artists. There are so many talented people within the mill, working with such energy and diversity, that I' m very proud to do the job. I enjoy working within a team. Everyone works with the same aims. We are making real progress which is very encouraging. We usually enjoy a laugh and a drink together after meetings". Great!
Were you, or do you know anyone who may of worked at Woodend Mills in the past? Maybe your Grandparents worked at the Mill in the 40's, 50's or even earler? If so, then please contact us through the contact page or you can phone Chris on 07903 455 388. Our aim is to make a new page for the site featuring Recorded Conversations of ex Mill Workers. These would then be edited as mp3 files and added as POD CASTS including a portrait. We are hoping to capture stories of the past so future generations can listen and understand about their local Heritage before it has all disapeared. We would be very greatful if you could help with this project. Thank You.
